The International Organization for Migration (IOM) is a dynamic and growing inter-governmental organization, with 125 member states, committed to the principle that humane and orderly migration benefits migrants and society.
IOM’s regional office for Southern Africa is based in South Africa and caters to IOM activities in the entire SADC (South Africa Development Community) region. IOM also has offices in Angola, Democratic Republic of Congo, mauritius, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe. In addition, IOM runs activities in Namibia and Swaziland. |

Combating Xenophobia and Assisting Displaced Migrants
SOUTH AFRICA - Several South African civil society and public institutions have joined IOM to challenge xenophobia and to show solidarity for thousands of migrants displaced by recent violence that left 60 people dead.
The African Cultural Heritage Trust , Sonqoba Community Development Project, Kaya Collections cc, Jabron Trading, SHIFT, Jabu Stone and IOM together hosted a concert yesterday in Johannesburg, showcasing performances by scores of South African traditional groups and artists. More than 3,000 people, mostly South Africans, attended the concert and made in-kind donations which were delivered on the same day to a government-hosted temporary shelter-site for displaced migrants at Rand Airport. |

Migrants in South Africa Seek Assistance to Return Home SOUTH AFRICA - Thousands of foreigners fleeing South Africa in the aftermath of the ongoing xenophobic attacks are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance, prior to and after arrival in their home countries with IOM receiving constant requests for voluntary return assistance from many different nationalities. |
